Routine Dental Care

It only takes twenty four hours for plaque that is not removed from your teeth to turn into hard calculus (tartar)! Your daily routine helps control plaque and tartar buildup, but there will always be areas that need special attention. Most people require regular maintenance cleanings 2-4 times a year. At these cleaning appointments, the pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure that they are healthy. Any plaque and calculus will be removed from above and below the gum line. In addition to your cleaning and checkup, your appointment will usually include:

  • X-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
  • Examination of tooth decay: Check all tooth surfaces for decay.
  • Oral cancer screening:
    • Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Oral hygiene recommendations: Review and recommend oral hygiene aids as needed. (Electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, etc.)
  • Teeth polishing:
    • Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

Patients consider Invisalign to be a positive addition to their lives. With custom-made, clear, removable plastic aligners, Invisalign treatment is easy, convenient and can be less painful than other orthodontic procedures. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, consider these key benefits of Invisalign treatment:

  • Healthier gums: removable aligners allow patients to brush and floss normally
  • Easier cleanings: no metal to work around. Lessens the chance of plaque retention, tooth decay and periodontal disease
  • Non-invasive: patients look forward to their visits
  • Improved well-being: straighter teeth may provide your patients with better overall health

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. They provide a foundation to replace your missing teeth, either with removable replacement teeth or fixed crowns. Implants have many advantages including:

  • Natural appearance. Dental implants can look and feel like your own teeth.
  • Improved function. Dental implants restore much of the chewing function lost when natural teeth are removed. When used with dentures, they can help prevent the dentures from slipping.
  • Improved comfort. Implants become part of you, and patients often report that their implants are the most worry-free “teeth” in their mouths.
  • Better self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel more confident.
  • Better oral health. Unlike traditional bridgework, dental implants can eliminate the need to grind down other teeth. Because nearby teeth do not have to be sacrificed, more of your own teeth are left intact. And, individual implants may still allow you to floss.
  • Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.

CROWNS AND BRIDGES

A crown is a covering that is put over a tooth. The crown helps restore your tooth to its normal shape and size. It can also improve the way the tooth looks.

  • have a cavity that is too large for a filling
  • have a missing tooth
  • have a dental implant
  • have a tooth that is cracked or broken
  • have had root canal treatment
  • want to cover a discolored or irregularly shaped tooth and don’t like the appearance

EXTRACTIONS AND BONE GRAPHING

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved and needs to be removed. When a patient desires an implant to replace the missing tooth, enough bone must be present to support it. Bone grafting is basically a way of building up the jaw bone to accommodate dental implant placement.  There are several ways that we can grow bone, including the use of bone grafted from the patient or another donor, use of synthetic mineral, and human growth factors.
