Routine Dental Care

It only takes twenty four hours for plaque that is not removed from your teeth to turn into hard calculus (tartar)! Your daily routine helps control plaque and tartar buildup, but there will always be areas that need special attention.
Most people require regular maintenance cleanings 2-4 times a year. At these cleaning appointments, the pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure that they are healthy. Any plaque and calculus will be removed from above and below the gum line.
In addition to your cleaning and checkup, your appointment will usually include:

  • X-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
  • Examination of tooth decay: Check all tooth surfaces for decay.
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Oral hygiene recommendations: Review and recommend oral hygiene aids as needed. (Electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, etc.)
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

Crowns and bridges

A crown is a covering that is put over a tooth. The crown helps restore your tooth to its normal shape and size. It can also improve the way the tooth looks.

  • have a cavity that is too large for a filling
  • have a missing tooth
  • have a dental implant
  • have a tooth that is cracked or broken
  • have had root canal treatment
  • want to cover a discolored or irregularly shaped tooth and don’t like the appearance

Dental Implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. They provide a foundation to replace your missing teeth, either with removable replacement teeth or fixed crowns. Implants have many advantages including:

  • Natural appearance. Dental implants can look and feel like your own teeth.
  • Improved function. Dental implants restore much of the chewing function lost when natural teeth are removed. When used with dentures, they can help prevent the dentures from slipping.
  • Improved comfort. Implants become part of you, and patients often report that their implants are the most worry-free “teeth” in their mouths.
  • Better self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel more confident.
  • Better oral health. Unlike traditional bridgework, dental implants can eliminate the need to grind down other teeth. Because nearby teeth do not have to be sacrificed, more of your own teeth are left intact. And, individual implants may still allow you to floss.
  • Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.

Extractions and Bone Grafting

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved and needs to be removed. When a patient desires an implant to replace the missing tooth, enough bone must be present to support it. Bone grafting is basically a way of building up the jaw bone to accommodate dental implant placement.  There are several ways that we can grow bone, including the use of bone grafted from the patient or another donor, use of synthetic mineral, and human growth factors.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Sometimes people feel anxious about dental treatment. For many of them, nitrous oxide is a safe and effective tool that can help them relax.
Sometimes called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide can help you feel more comfortable during certain procedures. It is safer than other methods and is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions. After breathing normally through your nose for a few short minutes, you should start to feel more relaxed. Some people may feel a little light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.

Especially For Seniors

Taking good care of your teeth is important at any age. Losing your teeth is not inevitable, especially when you receive the appropriate dental care. It is our goal that your teeth can last a lifetime!
Like the rest of your body, your mouth changes as you age. The nerves in your teeth can become smaller, making your teeth less sensitive to cavities or other problems. That means that even if you don’t feel pain, you should still get regular dental exams.
If you want to eat well, speak well, stay healthy, and look great throughout life, you are going to need a healthy mouth.
Our staff is well trained in handling patients with complicated medical issues. Often seniors have complex medical conditions that can be made worse by infections or problems in the oral cavity. It is also very common to experience dry mouth as the result of multiple medications. Speaking with a dentist regarding your individual condition is very important.
We understand that you may also need special accommodations and pride ourselves on helping you in the best way possible. Whether it is scheduling your appointment around your medication regimen or assisting you with mobility issues such as a wheelchair or walking aid, we are here to help!

Helping Our Youth

It all started when Dr. Wiechert decided to reach out to a local Yorktown sports team to provide free custom sports guards. What began as an effort to protect the teeth and mouths of our youth took an interesting turn when one young girl expressed her interest in the dental field. Since that time, Dr. Wiechert has been actively involved in mentoring young people interested in dentistry. She hopes that many of them go on to become the best dentists in Yorktown and the surrounding communities!
