Any Westchester dentist can tell you that there has been an increase in drug-related dental problems in the last few years. And while many of these issues are related to opioid abuse, marijuana can also play a significant role in gum disease. According to a study administered by the CDC and featured in the Journal of Periodontology, frequent cannabis use is associated with “increased indicators of mild, moderate, and severe periodontal disease.” This predisposes marijuana users to issues such as toothache and tooth pain, tooth extraction, need for dental implants, and tooth decay. And don’t forget that these individuals may need the best teeth whitening available! So do yourself a favor and put away the pot!
